Ex-Premier League player Kevin Nolan is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the new manager of Grimsby Town.
The 37-year-old, who spent 10 years at Bolton before joining Newcastle and later West Ham, is reportedly set to replace Michael Jolley as the manager of the Sky Bet League Two side.
Nolan has previously managed at Leyton Orient and most recently at Notts County. However, he has been without a club for almost 18 months having left the Magpies in August 2018 after 84 games in charge.
According to the Nottingham Post, Nolan is “odds-on” to take over the reins at Blundell Park. He has previously been linked with managerial vacancies at the likes of former club Bolton and Lincoln City, and should be join Grimsby he will be hoping to lead the club away from the relegation zone following the sacking of Jolley.
The club cited a “recent run of poor results” as the reason for his exit and Jolley said it had been a privilege to manage the League Two side.
He posted on social media: “I would like to place on record my thanks to the players, staff and supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club following my departure by mutual consent today.
“It has been a genuine privilege to work for such a fantastic club over the last 18 months. I will never forget the incredible support we received for those final ten matches in 2017/2018 when the club found itself in a challenging position.
“It has been a wonderful experience to learn about this area over the last 18 months and I would like to credit the work of the Fisherman’s Mission who do a fantastic job for people in Grimsby.
”One of the objectives for this season was to achieve the club’s highest finish since 2005/2006 – 14th position in League Two – and I remain convinced that this squad of players can deliver that. I would like to wish them the very best in doing so.
“Finally, I must pay a particular thanks to my immediate staff; Anthony Limbrick, Greg Howard, Sam Russell and Dave Moore who have worked tirelessly to support me in this role. I have a fantastic relationship with them all.”
