OPINION: Changes required for Peterborough United

The weekend’s game at Bloomfield Road was a chance for Posh to take another step towards their eventual goal of achieving promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

They took an early lead, and from then they should have pushed on to secure three points. That was not the case. In fact, that was far from the case.

Posh looked sluggish, slow on the ball, they lacked creative, and perhaps more importantly their defense got bullied by Blackpool’s attack.

Tonight offers Darren Ferguson’s men a chance to bounce back. Posh make the trip to the West Midlands to face a Shrewsbury Town side who sit smack bang in the middle of the Sky Bet League One table.

Quite often this season, Ferguson has stuck with the same starting XI week-in, week-out, but tonight, changes are needed.

For me, Nathan Thompson has not been offered enough of a chance at right-back. Sure, Niall Mason has not had the worst start to life at Posh, but his performance on Saturday certainly has not done him any favours, and I would be surprised to see him in the starting XI for tonight’s game.

Joe Ward is a player that is absolutely adored by Posh fans, but is always used sparingly by whichever manager they have in charge. His energy, pace and power was something we did not have any of at the weekend, and I could see him getting put back in midfield ahead of any one of the three that played at the weekend.

Alex Woodyard is another man who has been tipped for a recall to the starting XI. He was the club captain last year, and although many people aren’t huge fans of him, he offers protection to the back four, something Louis Reed and Josh Knight simply did not do at the weekend.
