Brentford confirm summer signing has suffered a “serious knee injury”

Brentford have confirmed on their official club website that striker Nikos Karelis has picked up a “serious knee injury” after he was stretchered off on his first start for the club since joining earlier this summer.

Greek striker Nikos Karelis joined Brentford in the summer transfer window, putting pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Bees. His career has been hampered by injury problems and now, he has suffered another significant setback.

It has been confirmed that Karelis suffered a serious knee injury late on in the first-half of Brentford’s game against Millwall at the weekend. He was stretchered off the pitch and now, he will undergo surgery on his knee before starting rehabilitation and recovery.

A club statement posted on their official website said:

“Brentford striker Nikos Karelis has suffered a serious knee injury that is set to prevent him playing for a significant period of time. The 27-year-old suffered the injury in the first half of Brentford’s win against Millwall last Saturday, 19 October. It was his first start for the Club and came just after he had hit the post, coming within inches of marking his full debut with a goal.

“Nikos was seen by a consultant earlier this week and has begun his rehabilitation at the Club’s Training Ground with our medical team. He will have surgery in the coming weeks and will then work his way back to fitness.”

In the absence of Karelis, Thomas Frank could continue to play Ollie Watkins through the middle, which has paid off the early stages of the season. Watkins has scored eight goals in 13 Championship games so far this season, so the Bees will be hoping the forward can keep up his strong form with Karelis set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
