Former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is in contention for the vacant Leganes job.

The Spanish La Liga side are in the hunt for a new manager to replace ex-Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who departed the club this week, as per a report by Marca.

Poyet, who is 51 years-old, has been out of management since his sacking by French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux over a year ago.

The Uruguayan had a successful playing career for the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur before delving into the coaching world.

Poyet started out with coaching roles at Swindon Town, Leeds United and Spurs before getting his first managerial role at Brighton and Hove Albion in November 2009.

He guided the Seagulls to the League One title in 2011 and got them into the Championship Play-Offs two years later.

Poyet then joined Sunderland in 2013 and got the Black Cats to the League Cup final in his first season at the club, where they lost to Manchester City at Wembley.

Sunderland sacked Poyet in October 2015 and he has since moved onto have spells abroad in Greece with AEK Athens, Spain with Real Betis, China with Shanghai Shenhua and France with Bordeaux.

Poyet could now be on his way back to Spain with Leganes. They are currently bottom of the league and haven’t won in nine games so far this season.
