Millwall make approach to League One club for new manager

Millwall have reportedly approached Wycombe Wanderers over speaking with manager Gareth Ainsworth according to Sky Sports sources.

It is believed they have held initial talks over Ainsworth becoming their new boss but they have now made a formal approach to speak with him. The Lions will be required to pay compensation should they wish to appoint Ainsworth.

Currently Ainsworth is in the running to replace Neil Harris at The Den along with former Birmingham City and Stoke City manager Gary Rowett.

Former player Tim Cahill is also a name which has been rumoured to be linked with the post although this would present a gamble for the London club with a lack of managerial experience on Cahill’s CV.

Ainsworth has also been given permission to speak to managerless Sunderland and appears to be a wanted man having currently guided Wycombe to second in League One and enjoying a successful spell with the club.

Harris quit as boss after four years at the club and Ainsworth now seems to be their top target and they are determined to land the 46-year-old.

Coach Adam Barrett has been put in caretaker charge and is expected to take the team to Brentford in the Championship on Saturday should they be unable to appoint Ainsworth in time.

Ainsworth is a very attack-minded manager and likes his teams to play aggressively and with a high press which is appealing to plenty of clubs. He has been in charge of Wycombe since September 2012 and is highly regarded at the club.
