Woodgate has his say on Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough tenure

Middlesbrough face Sheffield Wednesday at The Riverside on Saturday, where current Jonathan Woodgate will face off against former Boro boss Garry Monk.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough Head Coach Woodgate gave his take on Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk’s time on Teesside.

“What was difficult for him at that time, he had too many players” he said.

“I think the squad was probably too big in general to look after. It’s still imbalanced now when you look at it, really imbalanced.”

Woodgate was quick to say he wasn’t pointing the finger at Monk, but the imbalance is certainly there for all to see at Middlesbrough.

“I’m not going to sit here and start blaming people, there was definitely an imbalance to the squad. You can see that throughout the team, it’s so imbalanced. A lot of money was spent in that era, money won’t be spent like that in the next couple of years.”

Monk spent big in his one season at the club, buying the likes of Britt Assombalonga for £15m, Martin Braithwaite for £9m, Darren Randolph for £5m and Ashley Fletcher for £6.5m. Jonny Howson, Cyrus Christie, Ryan Shotton and Marvin Johnson also arrived for undisclosed fees.

Although Monk’s tenure is still having an effect on the club, Woodgate did defend the Owls boss, stating he wasn’t given enough time.

“There was a lot of hope at that time, but how long did he have in the job?” added Woodgate.

“You need time to really implement your ideas and bring your own type of players in.”

“Managers need time.”
