Ex-Bradford City and Millwall defender signs for Perth Glory

Former Bradford City and Millwall defender James Meredith has signed for Perth Glory, as announced by their official club website.

The left-back was a free agent after leaving Millwall at the end of last season.

Meredith, who is 31 years-old, trained with Portsmouth over the summer but didn’t earn a contract with the League One side.

He has now returned to his native Australia and will be looking forward to the start of the A-League season.

Meredith was born in Albury, New South Wales but moved to England to join Derby County in 2004. He has since gone onto have spells at Sligo Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, York City, Bradford and Millwall.

He has spoken to Perth’s website after signing: “The boss [Tony Popovic] sold it to me. I really liked the way he talked about his plans for the future of the club and when I looked at the squad list, I know it’s a strong group of players. We’re looking to become Champions. The club did so well to finish top last season, so we’ll be aiming for that again and I can’t wait to be a part of that campaign.”

Their Football Director Jacob Burns said: “This move speaks volumes. The fact we’re attracting players of Meredith’s calibre is a testament to our growth as a club. With international experience to his name and having spent over a decade in the UK, we’ve signed a player of great pedigree at a prime time in his career.”

Perth are also home to ex-Birmingham City, Leeds United and Preston North End midfielder Neil Kilkenny.
