Are Southend courting six-time top scorer and Champions League winner as next boss

Southend lost then manager Kevin Bond earlier this month on the back of six defeats at the start of the League One season. Since then, caretaker manager Gary Waddock has been holding the reigns of the club.

The Shrimpers sit in an uncomfortable 21st place in the table, having won just once and drawn just once over their first nine games of the current campaign. With a side in a position such as that, it is going to take a special managerial candidate to drag Southend around.

You know what, Southend might just have found their man.

When you say someone special, they don’t come much bigger for a club in Southend’s position than the talented former Celtic, Barcelona and Sweden legend Henrik Larsson. 104 caps (37 goals) for Sweden, 56 games (33 goals) for Celtic and featuring for Barcelona too. Yes, you can say that Larsson has pretty much done it all.

Now, now he’s rocked up at Roots Hall and has been spotted taking in Southend’s game against MK Dons. It was a game where the former Sweden superstar saw Southend rack up only their second win of the season thanks to an early goal from Charlie Kelman (4′) and some resolute defending.

Larsson, who quit as manager of Helsingborgs last month, is said to be in the running for the vacant hot seat at Roots Hall with caretaker boss Waddock.

It could be an interesting time for Southend United fans could the next few days, a few days where an appointment like Larsson’s might just result in a swing of good fortune.
