Doncaster Rovers deal for ex-Sunderland, West Brom and Everton striker “a possibility”

Speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, Doncaster Rovers first-team coach John Schofield has said that a deal for free agent striker Victor Anichebe could be a possibility after it was confirmed that the former Premier League striker was training with the club.

Earlier this week, we covered reports here on The72 saying that former Sunderland, West Brom and Everton striker Victor Anichebe was training with League One side Doncaster Rovers as the Nigerian international looks to find a new club having been out of the game since January 2018.

Anichebe has been out of football since he was released by Chinese side Beijing BSU over 18 months ago and now that he is training with Doncaster, it has now been said by first-team coach that he imagines a deal could be “a possibility” as the club look to add another striker to Darren Moore’s ranks. Schofield said:

“I would imagine if he’s training with us he’s a possibility. Or maybe he’s coming in to have a look at us, and us have a look at him, get some fitness. He’s done okay.”

Schofield went on to add that the club are still looking to bring in another striker having failed to bring in a new number nine before the window slammed shut earlier this week. Rovers were determined to add another striker to take the place of John Marquis after he made the move to Portsmouth despite bringing in youngsters Niall Ennis and Kaziah Sterling in on loan from Wolves and Spurs respectively.

“We’re still looking for one. I don’t think we’re too far away but I think it’s like anything until you’ve actually got someone over the line. We’ve got a million strikers we can take but until you’ve actually got one over the line it’s irrelevant how many are out there.”
