Charlton Athletic complete deal for former Sunderland right-back

Charlton Athletic have completed a deal for former Sunderland right-back Adam Matthews as confirmed on their official website.

Matthews has signed for the Addicks on a one-year-deal following his release from League One side Sunderland at the end of the last season.

He made 28 appearances for the Black Cats but left once his contract expired. Matthews started his career at Cardiff and went on to spend four years at Celtic before joining the Black Cats in 2015.

The 27-year-old had been training with Charlton for a number of weeks and has clearly impressed and now been rewarded with a new deal.

With experience in the Premier League, Scottish Premier League and the English Football League, Matthews brings a wealth of knowledge to Lee Bowyer’s newly promoted side.

Matthews expressed his delight at the move which takes him to The Valley. “I’m excited. It’s been a tough summer for me personally, not knowing what was going to happen, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to come and train with the boys.”

“I want to kick on now and, firstly, stay in the division, but the lads have started really well, so hopefully we can keep that going. I know Jonny Williams and Tom Lockyer well from Wales and I played with Beram Kayal at Celtic so it’s been quite an easy transition for me and I’ve been training with the lads for a few weeks now, so I feel I can slot right in.”

Charlton’s Head of Recruitment Steve Gallen also gave his verdict on the transfer: “He’s a good right-back who is very attacking and loves getting forward which is something that Lee Bowyer was keen on in particular.”

“He’s completely proved his fitness and that he’s got a good attitude so he fully deserves the offer of a contract and balances out the squad. We wanted two players for every position and now we’ve finally got that.”

Matthews has proven himself at this level and will undoubtedly be an asset to a Charlton side looking to survive and cement their place in the division.
