Liverpool winger close to joining Leeds United before Rangers transfer

Liverpool winger Ryan Kent was close to joining Leeds United before his transfer to Rangers according to The Express.

Rangers agreed a fee of £7.5million which saw Kent swap Merseyside for Scotland however Leeds had a bid of around £4.5million rejected for the winger towards the end of the last transfer window.

The Whites were looking to increase their attacking options following the departure of Kemar Roofe as they aimed to bring in further reinforcements to aid their promotion push.

Leeds did however acquire Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal, Helder Costa from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jack Clarke from Tottenham and Jack Harrison from Manchester City all on loan but they would have liked the permanent capture of Kent to bolster their ranks.

The young winger spent last year on loan with Scottish club Rangers under the guidance of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard with them now making the deal a permanent one.

Kent impressed in the SPL last season as he netted six goals and created four assists in 27 appearances in the league. With their recent 2-0 defeat in the derby against Celtic, Gerrard will be hoping he can replicate that form again this season.

Kent struggled for first-team minutes during his time with the Reds and made just one first-team appearance. With the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all ahead of him in the pecking order, the chances of regular first-team football were slim for the near future.

Leeds will of course be disappointed to have missed out on Kent but with him having already spent time at Rangers and manager Gerrard’s close association with Liverpool it was always going to be tough to entice him to Elland Road.
