Leeds United terminate contract of versatile Dutchman

Leeds United have terminate the contract of versatile Dutchman Vernon Anita as confirmed on their official website.

His contract has been terminated by mutual consent due to him falling out of favour at Elland Road. Anita joined Leeds United after his contract had expired at Newcastle United in the summer of 2017 and went on to make 22 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The Dutchman helped Newcastle to the Championship title on 2016/17 but he has failed to have the same kind of impact at Elland Road.

Since joining Leeds, under new manager Marco Bielsa he has been unable to break into the team and was allowed to go out on loan to Dutch side Willem II on a season-long loan in August 2018.

The former Netherlands international made 27 appearances in the Eredivisie as they finished tenth in the league.

The 30-year-old then returned back to Leeds with the Dutchman then being linked with a move to Greek side Panathinaikos but the move hasn’t since materialised.

Leeds have certainly lost a versatile player in Anita who can play in a number of positions including defensive midfield and at full back. When Anita joined Leeds he was utilised primarily as a right-back or a left-back.

He started the season as a permanent fixture in the side under Christiansen but quickly fell out of favour when new manager Bielsa joined the club.

With plenty of options available and Bielsa not looking to include Anita any time soon it seems fitting for both player and club for him to be allowed to move on.
