Paul Warne “hopeful” Rotherham United will snap up winger who turned down Leeds United

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has said that he is hopeful that Rangers winger Jake Hastie will be joining the club after reports emerged claiming the Millers were close to sealing a deal.

Having reportedly turned down a move to Leeds United earlier this summer, Rangers winger Jake Hastie could be heading to England after all. However, it will only be on loan. Rangers boss Steven Gerrard brought Hastie in from Motherwell earlier this summer and is keen for him to head out on loan to gather more senior experience, and Rotherham United look set to be the side to bring him in.

Speaking on the proposed signing of Hastie (quotes via Football Scotland), Rotherham boss Paul Warne said:

“His arrival is probably the worst-kept secret in football. I understand that (Rangers boss) Steven Gerrard has mentioned he could be coming here. It would be remiss of me to say anything different, although I do like our club to announce things before anyone else.

“I want the player and I believe I have got a good chance of getting the player. I am hopeful that he will be joining us on Monday. But as everything in my football experience has told me – don’t count your chickens.

“I am hopeful and if he doesn’t come I have another couple of options that I think will help us.”

Over the course of the year, Hastie, 21, has become hot property. He caught the attention of sides last season with his impressive performances for Motherwell. In his emergence into the first-team, Hastie scored seven goals and provided one assist in 18 games from the wing after spending time on loan in the lower divisions.

A number of Championship sides were said keen on signing Hastie this summer, but he instead opted to join Steven Gerrard at Rangers having been impressed by their sales pitch.

Since joining, Hastie has played twice for the club and now, the Gers have made the decision to send him out on loan where he will be looking to gain more first-team minutes and experience under the management of Paul Warne.
