Charlton Athletic looked at signing ex-Derby County, Burnley and West Brom man

Charlton Athletic have looked at signing free agent right-back Tyrone Mears.

However, it looks like the Addicks have opted to offer a contract to former Celtic and Sunderland defender Adam Matthews instead, as per a report by London News Online.

Mears, who is 36 years-old, was released by Championship side West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season and has been weighing up his options ever since.

The experienced defender has racked up over 250 appearances in his career and could prove a handy acquisition for a Football League side still needing defensive reinforcements with him showing no intention to hang up his boots just yet.

Mears stared his career at Manchester City and rose up through their youth ranks before having spells with the likes of Preston North End, West Ham United, Derby County and Marseille.

Burnley snapped him up in 2009 and he spent two years at Turf Moor before switching to rivals Bolton Wanderers.

Mears had three seasons with the Trotters and then moved over to America to join Seattle Sounders, where he won the MLS cup in 2016. He appeared to enjoy his time over the pond and also went onto have spells with Atlanta United and Minnesota United.

He came back to England last summer and joined West Brom on a one-year deal and made a handful of appearances for the Baggies. His search for another club continues.
