Gillingham want Hearts midfielder – but face League One competition in chase

Gillingham manager Steve Evans has said to Kent Online that the club are looking to strike a deal with Scottish Premiership side Hearts to sign midfielder Olly Lee before the window slams shut next Monday.

With under a week remaining of the summer transfer window, Gillingham boss Steve Evans is looking to further bolster his ranks in what has been a busy summer for the club. 11 players have joined the club and Evans is keen to add another midfielder, with Hearts man Olly Lee on his shopping list.

Lee only joined Hearts a year ago from Luton Town and despite playing 41 times last season (six goals and 12 assists), it is said that he is available for transfer. Speaking to Kent Online about his interest in Lee, Evans said:

“He was a top player at Luton and a top player at Hearts last season. He needs some minutes. Watching some of his touches and his passing, he has been a joy to watch. We are trying but we are not quite there yet.”

Evans went on to add that he has a “brilliant relationship” with Hearts boss Craig Levein and the two have had quick talks over a possible deal for Lee, but also revealed that three or four other League One clubs are also interested in recruiting him.

“I have a brilliant relationship with their manager Craig Levein, all my career, and vice versa.

“We spoke very quickly on the phone and he was happy for us to look at him for a couple of days and he can have a look at us. Olly has three or four options in League 1. He is not our only option but he is obviously the option we’ve run with. We just need to balance the squad a little bit.”

Lee already has plenty of experience in English football, having come through the youth academy with Birmingham, spending plenty of time out on loan in the Football League during his years at St Andrew’s. He spent three years with Luton after leaving the Blues and now, after just one year in Scotland, he could be set to return.
