Wigan Athletic announce late deal for Blackburn Rovers skipper

Wigan Athletic have announced on their official club website that centre-back Charlie Mulgrew has joined on loan for the 2019/20 Championship season from fellow second-tier side Blackburn Rovers.

Wigan Athletic have beaten the deadline to sign Blackburn Rovers skipper Charlie Mulgrew, bringing the Scottish international in on a season-long loan deal. It was a case of whether or not the two sides had handed in the papers in time to get the move confirmed by the authorities, but it has now been confirmed that the 33-year-old has made the move.

Speaking to Wigan Today upon the confirmation of the transfer, Mulgrew said that he was pleased to get the deal done after a whirlwind Deadline Day.

“It’s all happened so quickly, but I’m happy to be here and I’m looking to do the best I can for Wigan. It’s an opportunity I’m looking forward to and I’m ready to give everything I can for this club.

“Wigan was always a team I was impressed with – the facilities, the stadium and the fans have all impressed me. The manager is a great character, you can see that straight away.

“As soon as you walk into the building you can sense a great atmosphere about the place and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Mulgrew arrives at Wigan Athletic with a wealth of experience. The Blackburn captain has made over 100 appearances in his three years at Ewood Park, also playing 208 times during his long stint in Scotland, where he came through the club’s youth academy.
