Newcastle United deliver blow to Stoke City and West Brom in their pursuit of striker

Newcastle United have rebuffed Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion in their pursuit of striker Dwight Gayle according to the Express & Star.

Championship clubs Stoke and West Brom can only ideally afford Gayle on a loan-deal but the Magpies are holding out for a permanent transfer or are willing to keep him if no club matches their valuation.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is desperate to bring in one or two strikers before the close of the transfer window and was interested in bringing back the former loanee to the Hawthorns.

Stoke are also looking to increase their attacking options but without the sale of any of their star players, in particular Jack Butland, they are unable to realistically afford a permanent fee for Gayle.

29-year-old Gayle is also preferring a permanent move so he can settle on his next move. Albion are open to a loan deal with an option to buy included should they win promotion but they are unable to afford a multiple-year deal on £65,000 a week which is believed to be Gayle’s wage bracket.

With only Kenneth Zohore and Hal Robson-Kanu at their disposal, the Baggies are threadbare in the striking department but are not willing to wait until the final hours to see if a possible loan deal could be back in the pipeline for Gayle. Should a deal not materialise they could then find themselves without any new strikers added before the transfer window closes.

West Brom remain interested in Albian Ajeti, who scored 21 goals for Basel last season, but West Ham and Brentford are also keen on the 22-year-old and he is thought to favour a move to the Premier League.

Stoke lost out to QPR on the opening weekend of the Championship season and could also benefit from another striker added to their ranks to aid Sam Vokes and Benik Afobe.
