According to The Daily Star, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has sanctioned a move which would allow the former Palace striker to join the Whites on loan for next season. But is this a move that Leeds will pursue with the vigour it deserves?
Kemar Roofe is being strongly linked with a move away from Elland Road as reports of interest from Belgian club Anderlecht, managed by Vincent Kompany emerged yesterday from local and trusted reporter Phil Hay.
Roofe would be a significant loss for the West Yorkshire club as he has been the top scorer for the past two seasons, scoring fifteen goals last time out, but the reported interest is believed to be factual, with the player reportedly set to fly to Belgium over the weekend in order to undergo a medical in line for the £7m move.
So where does that leave Leeds?
Well, since the news broke regarding Roofe, there has been one predominant name on the lips of Leeds United fans everywhere… and that name, is Dwight Gayle.
Gayle (28) tore the Championship apart last season with West Brom, scoring twenty two times, so his pedigree, especially at this level, is hard to deny, however, there are no concrete reports to back up an actual Leeds United approach.
Marcelo Bielsa was made to rue missed chances in his and the clubs quest for promotion last time out, so Gayle, with his lightening pace and ruthless instinct in front of goal could be just the ointment to cure any play-off hangover and heart-ache from last season.
You would be forgiven for questioning the credence of said report, as the source is not the strongest, but the fact that Gayle has failed to feature for The Magpies so far this summer tells it’s own story.
The acquisition of Dwight Gayle would be somewhat of a coup for Leeds, but a signing that many see as a necessity if they are to take a promotion push seriously, especially should they lose Kemar Roofe, which is looking more and more likely.
A touch on the Leeds fans thoughts on the situation was covered my myself earlier here at The72.
Scary front line at Elland Road should this move happen.
