Scottish Premiership side swoop in to sign ex-Leeds United trialist

St. Johnstone have announced the signing of goalkeeper Max Johnstone.

The 20-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Scottish Premiership side, as announced by their official club website today.

Johnstone spent time on trial at Leeds United earlier this summer and played for the Whites in a friendly against non-league outfit Tadcaster Albion.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were weighing up whether to offer him a deal to join their Under-23’s side after his brief spell in Yorkshire but decided against it in the end.

Johnstone has been in the hunt for a new club after he was released by Sunderland at the end of the season following their failure to gain promotion from League One.

He only joined the North-East side last summer but spent just a single campaign with the Black Cats. He was a key player for their Under-23’s under Elliott Dickman.

Johnstone, who was born in Preston, had spells as a youngster in the academies at Fleetwood Town and Manchester United before his move to Sunderland.

His brother, Sam, plays in the Championship for West Bromwich Albion and has also previously played for Manchester United.

He will now be looking forward to the next chapter of his career in Scotland with St Johnstone and will be eager to impress above the border. Can he challenge for their number one jersey this season?
