Former England defender warns West Brom they face huge loss if winger departs

We reported yesterday that West Bromwich Albion winger Matt Phillips was attracting interest from Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Brighton and former England defender Danny Mills has warned them this would be a huge blow to lose the winger according to Football Insider.

The 28-year-old has a wealth of Championship and Premier League experience and coupled with West Brom’s failure to gain promotion last season, they could now face a battle to retain him.

There have even been reports of a £9million bid from fierce rivals Aston Villa but this is yet to be confirmed and so far the Baggies have maintained there has been no approach from any other club for Phillips.

Mills said: “He’s not gone missing at West Brom but has fallen off the radar a little bit. He hasn’t quite developed as maybe some expected. I would say Premier League sides in and around the bottom half, without a doubt, but there might be some Championship sides that are looking for promotion as well who might also be interested.”

“It gives them a problem, doesn’t it? Yes, you have to balance the books but equally you’ve got to be able to challenge in the Championship to try and get that promotion and that’s difficult.”

“It would be a huge blow for them to lose another forward player. You start to wonder where their goals are going to come from.”

Having already lost Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez, to lose another source of goals would seriously hamper West Brom’s season should they not find adequate replacements before the transfer window shuts.

Phillips scored five goals and created six assists in the last campaign despite spells out of the side due to injury and West Brom will undoubtedly be desperate to keep hold of one of their star players.
