Leeds United forced to play waiting game on Phillips – not pushing for exit

There’s a lot of column inches being filled up about Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and his contract/transfer status at Elland Road.

The problem is that Phillips is contracted until 2021 and last season saw him produce a massive improvement over previous seasons under the tutelage of the legendary Marcelo Bielsa.  Those better performances also increased both the focus put upon him by others as well as his value.

Leeds United slapped a £30million figure on his head, a fee that was designed to scare away any suitors. Aston Villa had a bit of a nibble early on in the transfer window, but the Whites remained steadfast to their valuation and that interest died back.

The 22-year-old has only ever known his hometown club when it comes to football, and he’s such a vital cog in that side under Bielsa’s system. He featured in 42 appearances for the Whites last season, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

Another season like last season and you can almost feel clubs lining up to test United’s resolve over that £30million valuation. Leeds and Phillips are involved in contract talks, with some talk of an offer being made that is short of what Philips is said to be looking for. However, new Yorkshire Evening Post chief football writer Graham Smyth has some good news for Whites fans.

Whilst saying that Phillips “harbours ambitions to play in the Premier League“, Smyth goes on to write that “he’s not currently pushing for an Elland Road exit.” That reassurance should be enough to calm Leeds United fan fears somewhat as they enter the last push towards the season opener against Bristol City on Sunday.
