Leeds United could still have a chance with final transfer target

Meatloaf once sang that ‘two out of three ain’t bad’, and for Leeds United this transfer window it’s a case of ‘three out of four’ is better.

Helder Costa, Ben White and the returning Jack Harrison are the trio of targets that the Whites have landed from the four identified. The only one to evade them is Liverpool winger Ryan Kent.

The door looked well and truly closed to Leeds United on this front when Jurgen Klopp said that Kent would be allowed to leave Anfield, but that a loan deal wasn’t an option that was on the cards.  Speaking candidly of Ryan Kent and his position at the club, Klopp said in words carried by the Mail Online: “The time is over, I think, for loans because of his age. The players need to find a place where they can settle. A loan is not an option.”

This was seen as the preferred option for Leeds United to take, the best avenue for the Whites to explore. With Klopp closing this option off, it looked to have turned an avenue into a cul-de-sac. The Whites and Bielsa have been keen on Kent, there is little doubting that. Legendary Argentinian coach Bielsa is even said to have scouted the Oldham-born Liverpool winger at the Reds recent friendly vs Bradford City at Valley Parade. Kent started that game on the left side of a three-pronged attack, a game that Liverpool won 3-1.

However, Leeds Live digital sports writer Beren Cross says that there may be a glimmer of hope not yet extinguished that Leeds United could warm themselves on. He mentions that sources close to the Reds winger “still feel a loan may be the player’s ultimate destiny.” The reasoning given for this is pretty clear –  few clubs that would be willing to take a chance on Ryan Kent are going to offer double-digit £million deals to land him.

Cross postulates that “a loan may yet be used as a last resort by the Reds in order to keep Kent playing through 2019/20.” There is little chance that he will force his way into the star-studded line-up that Liverpool have, and his football education would be best served with regular first-team action elsewhere.

Should this theory hold water, then Leeds United will face competition from Scottish giants Rangers where Kent spent last season on loan. Former Anfield legend Steven Gerrard is keen on taking him back to Ibrox, especially after he impressed in his 26-game spell there last season, where he scored six goals and added six assists.
