Leeds United bid €15m for 16-goal Serie A striker Petagna

According to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, speaking in English on a live video-radio broadcast on the TuutoMercatoWeb Twitter page, Leeds United have bid €15m for Italian striker  Andrea Petagna of Serie A side SPAL.

Some Leeds United fans have been crying out for a new striker to join the Whites, and it appears that Tancredi’s report could be granting these fans exactly that. Speaking in English, after this teaser tweet (below), Tancredi gave the details of what had occurred.

He mentioned that Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani and the Whites had been looking for a striker with a high work rate, rather than one with a high goal return. After mentioning this, he then went on to state the news that Leeds United had entered a bid of €15m/£13.6m for Petagna with his current side SPAL.

The 24-year-old, one-cap Italian international spent last season on loan at SPAL, for whom former Whites striker Mirco Antenucci also plays, from Atalanta and it was his 16 goals that helped SPAL avoid relegation from Serie A. This triggered a €12million obligation to buy, which SPAL are said to have exercised at the opening of the summer transfer at the start of this month.

The €15million bid by Leeds was turned down by SPAL, with Tancredi saying that the Italian side is holding out for a fee that matches their €25million valuation of the hardworking, young striker. This strategy backs up an opinion from website Football Italia who wondered whether SPAL would be looking to turn a quick profit on the former Atalanta youngster who has played at Elland Road in a pre-season friendly a couple of seasons ago.

Petagna has the pedigree, coming up as he did through the youth ranks at giants AC Milan, going on to make five full appearances for them. He has 105 appearances at Serie A level (25 goals/10 assists) and 55 appearances in Serie B (eight goals/three assists). Tancredi said that despite having their first bid turned down, Leeds United might still enter an offer and could look to meet SPAL halfway at a €20milion – or £18.2million.
