Leeds United forgotten man still wanted by chasing club – still on “radar”

According to a report by Greek source SDNA, Leeds United’s Vurnon Anita is still wanted by Panathinaikos.

SDNA say that, after signing Gaia Zachid, the Greek Super League side remain interested in Anita who remains on their “radar.” They say that whilst there are no announcements from Leeds United as to whether the 30-year-old Dutchman has any future at Elland Road, he’s been wiped from Feyenoord’s transfer interests after their signing of Leroy Fer.

Leeds United captured the former Holland international on a free transfer from Newcastle United in early July 2017. After his move from the Toon to Elland Road, Anita featured in 22 games for the West Yorkshire club. However, it has been made clear that he has no future at the club under current head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Last season Anita was allowed out on loan to Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II where he featured in 33 games for the Dutch outfit across all competitions. The Dutch side have chosen not to make this deal a permanent one and, thus, Anita remains a Leeds United player.

However, like others such as Ouasim Buoy and Laurens de Bock, Anita remains a Leeds player in terms of name only with those not in the club’s plans told not to report back to Thorp Arch.

There was some talk of Anita moving to the other side of The Pond and signing up with an MLS side and this was something that we wrote about here on The72. However, with SDNA saying that Panathinaikos still see Anita as on their “radar” there could be more twists and turns in this story.
