Swindon Town set to turn to former top flight midfielder

Swindon Town are very close to signing free agent midfielder Jordan Lyden.

The Robins are offering a deal to him, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

Lyden, who is 23 years-old, has been in the hunt for a new club after leaving Aston Villa in March.

Swindon finished 13th last season in League Two and are aiming to get into the Play-Offs next term. Their manager, Richie Wellens, has been a busy man bolstering his squad so far this summer and has brought in Adam May, Rob Hunt, Zeki Fryers, Jerry Yates, Tyler Reid, Mathieu Baudry and Daniel Ballard.

They are now turning to Lyden to add more options and depth in midfield.

He was born in Perth, Australia and started his career with a spell at ECU Joondalup before moving to England aged 16 to join Aston Villa.

Lyden, who has represented Australia at Under-20 level in the past, rose up through Villa’s ranks and became a regular for their youth sides.

He made his first team debut for the Midlands side in a League Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers in January 2016 and made his first appearances in the Premier League versus Liverpool a month later.

Lyden was tipped for a big future at Villa Park but made a total of just six appearances altogether in the end with injuries halting his progress.

He spent time on loan in the fourth tier with Oldham Athletic last season and is set to earn a contract with Swindon now.
