Leeds United reported transfer target turns down move – what does this mean for the Whites?

As covered here on The72 over the course of the past few weeks, Leeds United are among the sides being linked with a move for Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo, with Argentine side Boca Juniors also said interested in the Ecuadorian.

Now, it has been claimed by reports from Italy that Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo has turned down the chance to make a move to Argentine giants Boca Juniors. Italian outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi has claimed that Boca lodged a four-year contract offer of up to £1.8 million to make the move to Argentina, only for the Lazio man to turn it down.

The Italian news outlet claims that he opted to turn down the move as his wife is said to have been against the idea of leaving Rome, leading to Caicedo rejecting the move despite having his head turned by the offer.

While it can be said that Caicedo rejecting a move to Boca means that the Argentine side are somewhat on the back foot in the pursuit for his signature, the reason behind his decision doesn’t help Leeds United’s reported interest. If the player’s wife is against the idea of leaving Rome, Caicedo could be likely to remain with Lazio.

Making the step down from the Italian top tier also dents Leeds’ chances of succeeding in their rumoured pursuit of the 30-year-old. However, the appeal of Marcelo Bielsa has helped the Whites bring in the likes of Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid and beat clubs from Germany and Portugal to sign Helder Costa from Wolves.

It awaits to be seen if Leeds make a firm approach to try and sign Caicedo and if this reported interest develops into anything more serious. With the start of the new season just over a week away – and with the added issue of Kemar Roofe being ruled out for four weeks – it will be interesting to see if Bielsa looks to make a move for Caicedo or another of the club’s reported targets.
