Brentford hotshot missing from Norwich win – transfer talk mentioned

One glaring omission from Brentford’s line-up for their impressive 3-1 win over Premier League new boys was striker Neal Maupay.  Many Bees fans would be excused for seeing this as hinting at an exit from Griffin Park.

However, according to website Birmingham Live, that isn’t the case. Aston Villa are said to have been sniffing around the French hitman over the summer window after his goalscoring exploits. The 22-year-old former Saint-Etienne striker scored 25 goals last season, as well as adding eight assists.

This level of output has marked the Versaille-born youngster out as a striker of some repute. With what he produced in a fair-to-middling Brentford outfit, it was bound to garner interest and that has come in the form of Aston Villa.

Villa’s interest is widely known and it is an interest that is concerted. It is also an interest that is being ramped up, according to certain elements of the press, with Maupay missing from Brentford’s pre-season tour of Austria and the aforementioned Norwich game.

Brentford are said to have slashed their asking price for Maupay to £15million, a reduction from their original valuation of the Frenchman at £22million.  All of this has combined to create a tombola-like transfer talk situation.

Speaking after the 3-1 victory over Norwich City, Bees boss Thomas Frank gave his reasoning behind Maupay’s absence. Speaking plainly he said: “With Neal Maupay, we know the speculation around him so we thought it was best to focus on the guys we took to Norwich.”

As excuses go, it is pretty formulaic and generic in nature. With all this in mind, it is understandable why Bees some fans are becoming more resigned that Maupay could be on his way out of Griffin Park.
