Swansea City set sights on Watford centre-back

Swansea City are interested in signing Watford defender Ben Wilmot on loan.

The Swans have turned their attentions to the centre-back after missing out on Chelsea’s Jake Clarke-Salter to fellow Championship side Birmingham City, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

Wilmot, who is 19 years-old, is expected to leave Premier League outfit Watford on loan next season to gain some more first team experience.

He spent the last campaign on loan in Italy with Udinese and made a handful of appearances for them in Serie A.

Swansea have so far managed to bring in free agent left-back Jake Bidwell through the door at the Liberty Stadium this summer but their new boss, Steve Cooper, is keen on bringing in some new signings before their second tier season begins.

Wilmot is a player the Swans are targeting to bolster their defensive ranks and give them some more depth in their thin squad.

The England Under-20 international started his career at Stevenage and rose up through their youth ranks. He made his first team debut in October 2017 in a league game against MK Dons and went onto make 15 appearances for them before he was snapped up by Watford in May 2018.

Wilmot has since played six times in all competitions for the Hornets as well as his loan at Udinese. He looks a real talent for the future and would be a shrewd coup by Swansea if they can land him on loan.
