According to a report on Spanish sports website Marca, Leeds United keeper Kiko Casilla is wanted back home in Spain by LaLiga side Sevilla.
The Spanish side, who finished 7th in LaLiga last season, have hit the transfer market with a vengeance and have already signed 10 players ahead of next season’s campaign. They are continuing to plunge into the transfer market, guided by the legendary Monchi, say Marca “in search of those positions that need reinforcing.”
Sevilla’s wanting of Casilla, Monchi has asked for a report on the Leeds stopper, centres on whether Sergio Rico stays with the club, the Spaniard is thought to be looking for a way out of the Andalucian club. That would leave Sevilla with just Czech keeper Tomas Vaclik as a first-team regular.
Monchi is wanting to right this situation and Casilla is one of the options that is being looked at. The 32-year-old former Real Madrid keeper joined Leeds United in January this year, instantly taking over from Bailey Peacock-Farrell as the Whites #1. There was much hope that his footballing pedigree would help create the solid base that would drive United back to the Premier League.
Things looked promising, to begin with. However, promise soon turned sour as some fans became more than a little concerned at his rash decision-making including mad rushes out of the area to clear the ball. It might be in the skill-set of modern goalkeepers, but these Leeds fans didn’t particularly take to it.
One such error led to Derby County’s equaliser in the Championship Play-Off Semi-Final at Elland Road – a game that ended in a 4-2 loss on the night for the home side Whites. From that point, it is safe to say that fan disillusionment with the former Real Madrid stopper has risen.
There was talk that United, after their failed Premier League promotion push, were looking to offload Casilla, a player who tops their wage structure on what many are saying is a wage of £30,000-per-week. However, this seems to have been cut back some and there are conflicting stories that he is wanting to stay at Elland Road for another season under Marcelo Bielsa.
The goalkeeping situation at Elland Road is a little strange at the moment. Whilst Casilla is wanting to stay, there is some confusion over the future of Bailey Peacock-Farrell who’s hardly had a look in during pre-season so far. There has been some talk in the media that Leeds United are still looking to bring in Newcastle United’s Karl Darlow, but nothing concrete has come of that to press.
