Rangers goalkeeper reportedly set for League One move

Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is reportedly set for a move to Simon Grayson’s Blackpool, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The former Newcastle man spent last season on loan at Scunthorpe in League One, being brought in by former Rangers and Bradford City boss Stuart McCall, whom he had played under at Ibrox. Despite the Humberside outfit’s relegation to League Two, Alnwick had impressed at Glanford Park but Steven Gerrard was reportedly still keen to get him off the books in Glasgow with depth in that area coming in the form of Allan McGregor and former Swindon shot-stopper Wes Foderingham.

Alnwick will no doubt provide stiff competition to Mark Howard between the sticks on the seaside, with Howard being their first choice keeper last season. Newly appointed and returning manager Simon Grayson had told the BlackpoolGazzette that he was confident of another addition to the squad coming this week. This comes after the signing of striker Ryan Hardie from Alnwick’s current side Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

Alnwick moved to the Scottish side after they triggered the £250,000 release clause in his contract with Port Vale in January of 2017. At Vale Park, thanks to a run of consistent performances, had gained a reliable reputation between the sticks, making 67 appearances for the club during his 2-year stint there. Alnwick came through the ranks at Newcastle United, but made only 6 appearances for The Magpies in 4 years, being loaned out to non-league outfit Gateshead, as well as a 1 game loan stint at Bradford City.
