Middlesbrough striker to return to action this evening against Salford

Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga returned to training last week, but didn’t feature in the sides pre-season game against Heidenheim at the weekend.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Middlesbrough Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate confirmed forward Britt Assombalonga will return to action in their pre-season friendly this evening at Salford City.

The striker is yet to kick a ball in pre-season due to his international commitments with DR Congo in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament this summer.

Having only returned to training last week, he is now ready to feature against the League Two new boys at The Peninsula Stadium.

“We wanted to give Britt a few more days before him playing,” said Boro boss Woodgate. “Salford will be the first opportunity for him to get some minutes in.”

So far this pre-season, two strikers have primarily been in rotation for the lone forward role, with Ashley Fletcher and Rudy Gestede sharing the number nine slot. 23-year old Luke Armstrong has also been given a chance, but the youngster is expected to play for the under-23s this upcoming season, or he could be shipped out on loan again to a lower league side.

The club’s official site also confirmed that goalkeeper Darren Randolph will miss the game through injury. The Republic of Ireland international was linked with a move away this week with a host of clubs interested, including Premier League duo West Ham and Aston Villa.

Defender Dael Fry is also expected to miss the trip to Salford, but Woodgate is hopeful he will be fit, along with Randolph, for the season opener against Luton Town next Friday.
