Hull City set to beat Portsmouth to the signing of Irish defender

Hull City are set to sign Cork City defender Sean McLoughlin by the end of the week according to RTE News.

The former Republic of Ireland international will undergo a medical on Thursday and sign a long-term contract at the Tigers as boss Grant McCann reshapes his squad ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

A fee has been agreed with Cork City and Hull City for the defender who has attracted interest from Portsmouth in League One. However, it appears that Hull have won the race to sign the promising 22-year-old centre back.

Preston North End have also previously shown an interest in McLoughlin but had been put off by his €250,000 valuation and now following contract negotiations he will be heading to the KCOM Stadium.

McCann was in charge of Doncaster Rovers last season and tried but ultimately failed to sign him in his time there.

McLoughlin’s contract with Cork City expires at the end of their current Premier Division campaign and it is believed that the defender is keen on making the switch to England.

Portsmouth had been monitoring McLoughlin but with Hull’s guarantee of Championship football it appears this has swayed the decision for the Irishman.

Other League One sides were also believed to be interested with his impressive form in Ireland alerting many clubs to his availability.

The Dubliner also had offers from Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers but a move to England will undoubtedly enhance his development as he looks to make the step up to English football.
