Charlton Athletic snap up former League One skipper after Luton Town trial

Championship new boys Charlton Athletic have completed their seventh signing of the summer transfer window, bringing in former AFC Wimbledon skipper Deji Oshilaja on a free transfer.

Deji Oshilaja left League One side AFC Wimbledon at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract with the club, and a number of clubs had looked at the possibility of bringing the former Cardiff City youngster in on a bargain deal.

Barnsley and Sunderland were said keen on Oshilaja this summer, with the defender also spending time with Championship newcomers Luton Town on trial, featuring in a friendly for the Hatters last week. However, it is fellow Championship new boys Charlton Athletic who have snapped up Oshilaja ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at The Valley and has said he is really excited to get going at the Addicks embark on the new Championship season.

“Charlton is a great club with a great fanbase and I’m really excited to get going. I was here (The Valley) for the play-off semi-final and the atmosphere was buzzing then so I can’t wait to get started.”

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer also spoke to the club website upon the confirmation of Oshilaja’s arrival, saying:

“I’m delighted. He’s another very good player. A leader, he was captain of his club last year so it’s becoming a trend. Our defenders are all leaders and winners. He’s a powerful boy and he can play all across the back. He’s very good in all those positions across the back, he’s versatile and that’s something we need.

“Lyle (Taylor) knows him well (from Wimbledon). He’s been having conversations with him, telling him how good it is at our place, to try and encourage him to come because there were other clubs interested in him.”
