Leeds United player keen on MLS move with wage demands blocking Greek switch

It has been widely reported over the course of the past few weeks that Leeds United man Vurnon Anita is set to make a move away from the Championship side this summer.

Greek side Panathinaikos have been trying the most to bring Vurnon Anita in from Leeds United ahead of the new season, with Marcelo Bielsa keen to get him and a number of other fringe players off the books at Elland Road to hopefully make way for more new arrivals.

But, despite the best efforts of both Leeds United and Panathinaikos, a deal is yet to be reached. The Whites offered to release Anita from his contract with the club early, attempting to negotiate a compensation package for the Dutchman, but it was turned down by Anita and his representatives. That being said, Leeds are said to be still trying to negotiate a package to allow Anita to leave on a free.

Now, it has been claimed by Greek news outlet SDNA (as cited by Sport Witness) that Anita’s high wage demands are proving to be a big stumbling block for Panathinaikos in their attempts to sign the former Newcastle United man, who is said to have had his head turned by potential interest from the American MLS.

The Dutchman’s time at Leeds United won’t remain in the minds of Whites fans for long. One season in and out of the side in the 2017/18 campaign before being shipped out on loan upon the arrival of Bielsa is all there is of his time at the club. Should he make a likely move away this summer, he will bring an end to an uneventful time in Yorkshire.

The former Newcastle United man has played 22 times for the club and it looks highly unlikely that he will be adding to that total.
