Oxford United decide against signing ex-Celtic and Newcastle United defender

Oxford United have pulled out of the race to sign Kilmarnock defender Stuart Findlay.

The U’s have been priced out of a move for the 23-year-old, as per a report by FootballScotland.

The 23-year-old impressed last season in the Scottish Premiership for Killie and has been linked with a move away in this transfer window.

He won’t be joining Oxford though, as confirmed by their boss Karl Robinson who has said, as per FootballScotland: “We’ve put a bid in for another centre-back because the Findlay one is out of our reach in some ways. We were willing to put a very substantial bid in. But we now hear it’s gone above and beyond that and we’ve withdrawn from it.”

Findlay started his career at Celtic and rose up through the youth ranks of the Glasgow giants. Findlay never made a senior appearance for the Hoops but enjoyed first-team experience out on loan at Greenock Morton, Dumbarton and Kilmarnock.

Findlay was released by Celtic in 2016 and joined Newcastle United on a free transfer. He played once for the Toon before moving back to Kilmarnock on loan the season before last, where he played 36 times.

Killie then made his move there permanent last summer and he has turned out to be a useful signing for them. He looks to have a bright future in the game and they will face a battle to hold onto him between now and the start of the season.
