Greek news outlet SDNA has claimed that Leeds United man Vurnon Anita has rejected the Whites’ plans to release him from his contract early in an attempt to move the Dutchman on this summer.
We reported here on The72 that Leeds United were looking to negotiate a compensation package allowing them to release forgotten man Vurnon Anita from his contract at Elland Road, with one year remaining on his current deal with the club.
The release would allow Anita to freely negotiate terms with a new club, speeding up the process on Leeds United’s end. Leeds reportedly offered to pay up to half of Anita’s deal to allow his release from the club, only for the offer to be turned down by Anita and his representatives.
Greek side Panathinaikos are determined to get a deal done for Anita this summer and have been in extensive talks with the former Newcastle United man over the course of the transfer window. However, the rejected of the compensation package offered by Leeds – who are very keen to get the 30-year-old off the books at Elland Road – offers an obstacle to the deal.
The Dutchman’s time at Leeds United won’t remain in the minds of Whites fans for long. One season in and out of the side in the 2017/18 campaign before being shipped out on loan upon the arrival of Bielsa is all there is of his time at the club. Should he make a move away this summer, he will bring an end to an uneventful time in Yorkshire.
The Whites will be hoping the deal does not hold up for too long as the club look to continue their clearout of fringe players ahead of the new Championship season. A number of young players such as Liam Kitching and Tyler Denton have left the club this summer, and first-team players Pawel Cibicki, Caleb Ekuban and Yosuke Ideguchi are expected to follow.
