Wigan Athletic make formal approach for Nottingham Forest defender

According to respected journalist Alan Nixon, Wigan Athletic have lodged an enquiry regarding right-back Tendayi Darikwa, who currently plays for fellow Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

Wigan Atheltic boss Paul Cook is in the market for a new right-back this summer with 2018/19 star Reece James’ leaving the club upon the expiry of his loan deal at the end of the season.

Free agent Alan Hutton has been heavily linked and a move for the former Aston Villa man could still be made, but it is said that the club have enquired about a Championship right-back as the start of the season nears.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported on Twitter today (Sunday) that the Latics have asked Nottingham Forest about Tendayi Darikwa, revealing that the offer from Wigan has not yet been accepted:

Wigan are looking to test the resolve of Forest with new manager Sabri Lamouchi wasting no time in shaping his new squad. The likes of senior players Michael Hefele, Liam Bridcutt, Daryl Murphy and Luke Steele have all been told they can leave, with striker Karim Ansarifard making a move away to Qatar as well.

Darikwa, 27, has been with Forest since 2016, when he joined from Burnley, Since his arrival at the City Ground, Darikwa has played 63 times, scoring one goal and assisting one goal along the way.

Prior to his Forest move, the Zimbabwean defender played 29 times for Burnley over the course of two seasons with the club. He had joined the Clarets from Chesterfield, where he came through the youth academy and played 150 times.
