Leeds United young defender departure confirmed as Bielsa continues clearout

League Two side Forest Green Rovers have completed the signing of defender Liam Kitching from Leeds United, confirming the signing on their club website on Monday.

We reported here on The72 on Monday that Marcelo Bielsa had given the green light to young defender Liam Kitching to make a move away from the club this summer, paving a way for him to make a permanent switch to Forest Green Rovers. And now, the move has been confirmed by the League Two side.

Having come through the academy at Leeds United and spent time playing for the club’s Under-23s under Carlos Corberan, Kitching made his breakthrough into senior football last season, heading out on loan to National League side Harrogate Town. He scored three goals and provided four assists from left-back in 34 games for the club, helping them to a place in the play-offs.

However, after their defeat at the hands of AFC Fylde, he returned to parent club Leeds. Now, he has moved away from the Elland Road club, but this time on a permanent basis, He has signed a three-year deal with Forest Green and is looking forward to getting started and making the step up to the Football League.

Speaking to the Forest Green club website upon the confirmation of the deal, Kitching said:

“I’m delighted to be here and I didn’t have any second thoughts when I heard about the opportunity. I came and met the manager and had a look around the club and it’s a really good place and they sold it to me straight away.

“I’ve been out on loan for the past two years and I think it is time for the step up now to really give it a good go.”
