Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Bristol City linked defender wants Championship switch

We reported here on The72 earlier this summer that Championship quintet Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, Bristol City, Hull City and Luton Town were all monitoring the situation of Coventry City centre-back Jordan Willis.

Now, with Coventry City confirming the departure of star defender Jordan Willis upon the expiry of his contract, it is expected that a number of clubs will be queueing up to make their move to bring the 24-year-old defender into ahead of the new season.

Championship sides Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, Bristol City, Hull City and Luton Town have all been credited with interest in Willis, as have League One side Portsmouth, but the second-tier quintet will be the only sides offered a boost by the words of Coventry City boss Mark Robins.

Speaking to Coventry Live, Robins said that Willis is determined to test himself in the Championship, turning down an offer to remain with the Sky Blues to allow himself to do just that.

“It was done at the end of the season. We offered him a contract and he turned that down.

“I left the door open for him in case he wanted to do something but, really, we have had to move on because we couldn’t wait for him. We moved on because Jordan has been looking for a long time to get himself a Championship club, and as far as I know that’s what he intends to do.

“Whether he has gone in somewhere now I have no idea because I haven’t spoken to him since we shook hands at the end of the season, knowing that he was going to get himself a new club.

“Jordan is a great lad who did brilliantly for us and we needed to move on.”
