Wigan striker heads to Scotland on loan

Wigan Athletic have allowed striker Devante Cole to leave the DW Stadium on a temporary basis, as he joins Scottish Premiership outfit Motherwell until January.

Cole, 24, joined Wigan back in January 2018 making the move from Fleetwood Town. However, he has only made six league outings for the Latics, failing to trouble the scoresheet.

He spent the beginning half of last season on loan at League One side, Burton Albion, scoring twice in 16 appearances, before returning to his parent club in January.

Cole, son of former Manchester United, Newcastle United and England striker Andy, started his career at Manchester City, and spent time on loan with Barnsley and MIlton Keynes.

Cole scored eight league goals for the two sides combined, making 33 appearances in league football during his time with the clubs.

His first permanent venture into the EFL was with Yorkshire side, Bradford City, scoring six times in 24 games before making the move to Fleetwood.

22 goals in 94 games attracted the attentions of Wigan, then in League One, before helping them to the title in the 2017/18 season, however he hasn’t featured for the club in well almost a year.

Cole has also featured at England youth level for four different age groups, scoring seven goals across those various levels, however he hasn’t featured for his country at any level since 2014.

Wigan start their second straight Championship campaign against relegated Cardiff City, on August 3. The Latics have also allowed Nick Powell and James Vaughan to leave the club.

Motherwell start their Scottish Premiership season against Livingston, on the same date, however Cole could be in action as early as today, with ‘Well in pre-season action against Gretna.
