Former Bolton Wanderers defender linked with Kilmarnock move

Former Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater is understood to be a transfer target of Ladbrokes Premiership club Kilmarnock according to reports by the Daily Record.

The 32-year-old Redcar-born centre-back is currently a free agent after his contract at former club Wanderers expired at the weekend.

Several clubs are expected to consider moves for Wheater and it has been suggested that Kilmarnock manager Angelo Alessio is ready to offer the player the opportunity to resume his career at Rugby Park this season.

Killie finished third in the Ladbrokes Premiership table last season, a remarkable achievement which led to former boss Stevie Clarke being appointed the new Scotland manager. The club now face the difficult challenge of maintaining their excellent form with new boss Alessio tasked with making further improvements to the squad this summer.

Potential target Wheater started his career with Middlesbrough and he went on to make 157 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals. The player joined Bolton Wanderers in January 2011 and chalked up more than 200 outings during his time in Lancashire.

Wheater was named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Year just two years ago as he helped The Whites to promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship. The club endured a torrid time both on an off the pitch last term as they immediately dropped back to the third tier.
