Sunderland keen on move for ex-Fleetwood Town and Millwall defender

Sunderland are keen on free agent defender Conor McLaughlin.

The 27 year-old was released by Millwall at the end of the season and is on the radar of the League One side, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The Black Cats are eager to bring in some signings over the coming weeks to help bolster their ranks ahead of another season in the third tier in the next campaign.

McLaughlin, who is a Northern Ireland international with 35 caps under his belt, has played over 250 games in his career and knows League One well.

The right-back started his career in Ireland with Linfield but moved to England in 2007 to join Preston North End. He made his first-team debut for the Lancashire side in a Championship fixture against Hull City in November 2010.

McLaughlin went onto play 27 more times for the Lilywhites and had a brief loan spell in League Two with Shrewsbury Town before he left Deepdale on a permanent deal to join in Fleetwood Town in July 2012.

He made 200 appearances for the Cod Army and chipped in with eight goals. He also played a key part in their promotion to the third tier in 2014.

McLaughlin was snapped up by Millwall two years ago and has played a combined 37 games over the past couple of seasons in London.

A move to Sunderland this summer would be a decent one for the full-back and an opportunity to get some regular football once again.
