Leeds United in enquiry for Lazio striker – targeted at Bielsa behest

According to Ecuadorian source Imperio Futbol, Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has asked the club to target Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo.

The headline of the short article says pretty much everything that needs to be know in that it states “El Loco Bielsa wants to take Felipe Caicedo” before adding further into the body of copy that the Lazio frontman “would play in England” at Bielsa’s personal request.

In a way, it is almost like ‘rumour bingo’ at the moment with Elland Road. There are very strong indications that the Whites have landed main target Helder Costa on a season-long loan from Premier League side Wolves. Added to this there were more fanciful ideas entertained that the Whites were interested in bringing Italian legends Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Totti to Elland Road.

It’s the nature of the beast is this, Whites fans devour news on their club and they are more than adequately fed a steady diet of it. However, this ‘interest’ in Caicedo is not new and does have some ‘previous’ in that Leeds were linked with the 30-year-old last summer as well.

Caicedo is, of course, known to English football after his £7million transfer to Manchester City in 2008 – he played 35 games for the Citizens, scoring seven goals, before a move away to Spanish side Levante in 2011 for a fee of around £900,000. Since then he’s enjoyed big money moves to Lokomotiv Moscow (£6.75m – 15 goals) and Al Jazira (£6.3m – five goals) before finding his way to current side Lazio.

Leeds wouldn’t be getting a bit-part, washed-up player either, Caicedo featured in 28 Serie A games for Lazio last season, scoring eight goals and adding two assists. Altogether, the Ecuadorian international has 15 goals in 71 games for Lazio. Wherever he played in Leeds United’s frontline, you’d bet on him scoring in the Sky Bet Championship.

Should this interest firm u, should Bielsa’s behest prove true, then fans can only salivate at the thought of someone like Felipe Caicedo playing off the likes of Pablo Hernandez, Kemar Roofe and the soon-to-be joining Helder Costa.
