Portsmouth end pursuit for Peterborough United’s 18-goal striker amid £750,000 price tag

It has been reported over the course of the past few weeks that Portsmouth have been interested in signing striker Matty Godden from fellow League One side Peterborough United this summer. But now, it has emerged that Pompey have backed out of their pursuit to try and sign him.

The Peterborough Telegraph has reported that Portsmouth have brought an end to their chase for Peterborough United striker Matty Godden, who they have been keen to bring to Fratton Park this summer.

It has been reported here on The72 that Posh have knocked back approaches from Portsmouth for Godden already this summer, with the League One club keen to keep the 27-year-old at London Road for the 2019/20 season.

And now, Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has confirmed that Posh have been successful in their efforts to fend off interest in the former Stevenage striker, saying to the Portsmouth News (as cited by the Peterborough Telegraph):

“It was a verbal bid (for Godden), I phoned Darren Ferguson and discussed it with him, that was six weeks ago. We haven’t put in another bid and no we are not going back for him.

“We discussed it and the price was too high. It’s just about their valuation and where we were. Fair enough to Peterborough, I totally respect that. I did phone Darren – but we haven’t visited it since then and won’t be going back.”

Posh were said to be demanding £750,000 to let Godden leave to their League One rivals this summer, with Pompey reportedly only willing to part with £500,000.

Godden enjoyed a successful first season at Peterborough United, netting 18 goals in 48 games across all competitions. He endured a difficult spell in the middle of the season, scoring just one goal from October to March, but enjoyed an upturn in the closing months of the season upon the departure of Steve Evans and arrival of Darren Ferguson.
