Bristol City see off late interest from Leeds United and Hull City in race for League Two star

Bristol City are set to win the race to sign Colchester United midfielder Sammie Szmodics.

The Robins will pay £750,000 for the 23-year-old, according to a report by Bristol Live.

Lee Johnson’s have seen off late interest from Leeds United, Hull City and Derby County to be in pole position to land him.

Szmodics rejected a move to League One side Peterborough United last week with his heart set on a move to the Championship.

The midfielder joined his local side Colchester in 2002 and progressed up through their youth ranks. He made his first-team debut in September 2013 in a League One fixture against Bristol City.

Szmodics has since gone onto play 162 times for the Essex club, scoring 38 goals, 15 of which came last season. He also had a brief loan stint in non-league with Braintree Town in 2016.

He is set to become Bristol City’s first signing of the summer. Johnson’s men finished 8th last season in the second tier and are aiming for the Play-Offs in the next campaign. Szmodics will offer them another option in the attacking department.

It is a blow for Leeds to miss out on him. The Whites are in the hunt for a replacement for Jack Clarke, who is set to join Tottenham Hotspur.

Hull and Derby will also both have to look elsewhere after missing out Szmodics. The Tigers made their first signing of the transfer window yesterday by landing goalkeeper Matt Ingram from QPR.
