Leeds United and Middlesbrough turned down by in-demand winger

According to a story from the Irish Independent, Championship rivals Leeds United and Middlesbrough were two English sides turned down by rising Irish winger Neil Farrugia.

The 20-year-old University College Dublin (UCD) winger turned down interest from Enlgand in order to remain in Ireland and finish his studies at UCD where he is studying for a degree in Biomedical Science.

Farrugia has, instead, signed for Irish side Shamrock Rovers and the article says that he will “spurn all offers and stay in Ireland for at least another year.” He’d spent some time in England, enjoying a trial for Manchester City and their renowned Under-23s.

As the above action shot shows, Farrugia is an Ireland international, the fleet-footed winger having represented his country at both Under-19 and Under-21 levels. Domestically though, he’s moving to Shamrock Rovers on the back of a League of Ireland season with UCD where he featured in 12 games and scored one goal. His other experience came in last season’s First Division campaign for UCD, a campaign where he featured in 16 games and scored once.

Leeds United are known to be looking for additional attacking prowess, and have been mentioned to be interested on Wolves’ ex-record signing Helder Costa with Bristol City’s Callum O’Dowda also linked in certain quarters.

On the other hand, Middlesbrough’s new boss Jonathan Woodgate might want to address what many saw as a somewhat impotent attack last season, this might explain their interest in Farrugia.

Anyway, it is thought that the young Irishman will soon be putting pen to paper on an 18-month deal with the Hoops, a deal that will scrub any interest from England.
