Bristol City fight to keep hold of star defender

A host of Premier League clubs are interested in signing Bristol City centre-back Adam Webster, as reported by the Mirror. Burnley, Watford, Southampton and Newcastle are the clubs allegedly fighting for the 24-year-old’s signature.

The 6ft 3in defender made 44 appearances for the Robins last year, helping them achieve the fourth best defensive record in the Championship. Indeed, Webster played a pivotal role in City’s success in 2018/19 and his ability to play the ball out from the back has attracted a host of Premier League scouts. The former Ipswich man won City’s Player of the Season award and would be hugely missed by the play-off hopefuls if he were to leave for the Premier League.

With the sales of Bobby Reid, Joe Bryan and Lloyd Kelly to Premier League opposition in the last 12 months Bristol City have been labelled a selling club. While it is admirable that City allow their stars to move on to fulfil their dream of Premier League football, they must keep their prized assets if they want to achieve promotion themselves. Indeed, fans will begin to question Lee Johnson’s ambition if he sells another of City’s best players.

Additionally, selling Webster may hinder chances of tempting Chelsea defender Tamáš Kalas back to Ashton Gate. The Czech Republic defender forged a strong partnership with Webster while on loan last season, and any attempt to sign him permanently would likely be quashed if Webster was to be sold.

Webster signed a four year contract with City, and therefore it would take a large bid to tempt Johnson and the City board to let Webster go. If he were to be sold, that would leave City with just two senior centre-backs at the club, and therefore they will be desperate to keep hold of the Englishman.
