Walsall coach claims that new goalkeeper will be signed

Walsall’s newly-appointed goalkeeping coach Maik Taylor has claimed that the club are keen to sign a new goalkeeper, as reported by the Express & Star.

The 47-year-old joined the Saddlers four days ago, bringing a wealth of experience from a playing career that featured three promotions from the Championship and a League Cup win in 2011.

He will work closely with goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who boasts potential but proved inconsistent between the sticks last season. Taylor is looking forward to working with the 24-year-old, although has insisted that  the club may even look to recruit two goalkeepers to provide competition for the coveted number one spot:

“I am really looking forward to working with Liam – I have heard lots of good things about him.

“We will assess him as we go along and the more I see of him, we will look on ways to improve him and to fulfil the potential that I am hearing about. I am looking forward to getting him in and then we will address the situation because we need to bring another goalkeeper in, maybe two.

“I am looking forward to working with them all and then we can go from there.”

The former Bradford City coach acknowledged that mistakes, such as the ones Roberts made towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, are natural, but left supporters in no doubt that Roberts will be rivalled next season:

“Mistakes are part and parcel of the game, it’s just human nature in a way but it is important that you learn from your mistakes.

“It’s now a learning period for Liam. He has played a handful of games and his confidence and experience will slowly grow.

“There is no question we will get somebody in to push Liam all the way. Then we as a team will benefit if that competition pushes Liam to produce the kind of performances that are going to keep him in the team.”
