Leeds United joined by Middlesbrough in striker transfer battle

According to reports from the Turkish media (via Teesside Live), Middlesbrough could be set to battle it out with fellow Championship side Leeds United for Fenerbahce striker Michael Frey.

We reported here on The72 earlier this week that Leeds United were interested in Fenerbache striker Michael Frey, and now reports have emerged claiming that fellow second-tier side Middlesbrough are also in the chase for the Swiss frontman.

Leeds United have reportedly made a €2 million offer to try and bring Frey to Elland Road this summer, but they could be set for a transfer tug of war with Middlesbrough willing to splash out €5 million to bring an end to Frey’s brief and unsuccessful spell with the Turkish giants.

Frey only managed to score five goals in 25 games across all competitions last season, playing just 14 games in the Turkish Super Lig. The 24-year-old struggled to find form and nail down a place in the club’s starting eleven owing to consistent injury problems, including a groin injury and torn ligaments.

Despite his difficult first season with Fenerbahce, Frey managed to score two goals and provide one assist in five Europa League group games and has previously shown he can be a dangerous striker. During his only season with FC Zurich, Frey netted 16 goals and laid on six assists in 39 games, also enjoying two successful spells with BSC Young Boys.

The Swiss striker scored 24 goals and provided 14 assists in his first stint with the club after coming through the club’s youth academy, scoring 13 goals after his return to the club in the 2016/19 season.
