Middlesbrough interested in former QPR and Preston target

According to The Irish Mirror, Middlesbrough are interested in UCD and Ireland under-21 international winger Neil Farrugia.

Farrugia has previously been linked with a move to the Championship with Queens Park Rangers and Preston North End keen. However, their interest has since cooled, and the 20-year old is now wanted by several sides in the Irish Premier Division, alongside Middlesbrough.

Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk are all keeping tabs in his native Ireland, but Farrugia could be looking for a step up in his career. This could mean a move to England could be on the cards for the youngster.

Since breaking into the first team in 2017, he has gone on to make 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals in the process.

He received his first call up for the Ireland under-21 set up in March 2019, and he scored and assisted on his debut, as The Green Army triumphed 3-0 over Luxembourg in European Qualifiers.

The news comes at the same time as Robbie Keane has been announced as Middlesbrough assistant manager to new Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate. The Republic of Ireland legend may have good ties to Farrugia and could persuade him to move to Teesside.

According to the report ‘Bohemians want to sign a wide player in this transfer window and hope to land Farrugia on a short-term contract, after which he could move to England’.

Boro will be looking to secure a number of players this transfer window in the hope of achieving a top six finish under new boss Woodgate.
